It was written by Frederick Jackson Turner. The book uses the example of physics, biology and medicine to explain the basics of chemistry.It was written for both people who are interested in the medical profession and also those who are not. It will help both groups of people as the explanations of different chemical elements and their properties are very well done. This book is very easy to understand and it shows how complex chemical reactions really work.I like this book a lot because it comes as a printable PDF file that you can download from the Chicago Public Library's website. You can either download it directly from the library or buy a hard copy at your local bookstore. But if you want to read the book on your own computer then I highly recommend that you buy a PDF version.Chemistry: An Introduct ion to Fundamental Science is full of interesting and important information. For example, it explains the process of decomposition in chemistry and the role that life plays in this process. There are lots of other useful information included in this book as well.If you are a college student then you need to get hold of this book ASAP! Otherwise, you will be forever clueless about the subject and might end up not being able to get into the medical profession. I have read quite a few textbooks and some are better than others.If you are not too keen on online resources then go and get hold of this book from the Chicago Public Library. After all, it is their work!I am not sure about the printing costs of the eBook versions, but it should be a decent price for the Chicago Public Library to charge. So buy this book now and save money on the next one you will have to buy!

Quick Guide Working as a Restaurant Host/Hostess Image via pixabay.com A brief job description When you go to a dine-in restaurant, there is often an employee that greets you as you walk into the restaurants lobby. They often ask how many people are in your party, tell you if there is a wait, and are the ones to lead you to your table. They hand out menus, introduce you to your waitress, and you most likely wont see them again until you are leaving the restaurant after eating. These employees are the restaurant host or hostess and their main priority is to greet diners and make sure they are seated. They map out who will be sitting where and which server gets what table. Their job is to make sure that everyone is pleased and that the seating is efficient. They cant put too many tables under one waiter, but they also cant have parties waiting too long to get seated. They answer the lobbys phone and often take care of reservations. They also keep track of how many tables are open, need to be cleaned, etc. Unlike restaurant servers, restaurant hosts/hostesses generally do not get tips. However, they generally get paid a higher hourly wage than restaurant servers do, which somewhat makes up for the lack of tips. Give the best customer service you can As a restaurant host/hostess, you will most likely be the first person that will interact with customers. You will make up their first impression of the restaurant, especially when it comes to evaluating the customer service of the restaurant. You are more or less the face of the restaurant when customers walk in. If you are sitting down or are on your phone when they first walk in, it makes the restaurant employees look lazy and the restaurant itself run slow, leaving the customers imaginations to run wild to figure out why you could be acting like that in front of a customer in plain sight. You have to greet them positively when they first walk in the door. If a restaurant host/hostess greets customers with a bored expression or jumps straight into How big is your party today? the customer will feel like their business is not wanted and will be put off by the less than welcoming atmosphere. You want to greet the customer with as genuine of a smile that you can muster and attempt to strike up a welcoming conversation with the customer before leading the conversation to their dining preferences. You should do your best to make sure that the first part of their dining experience is the best it can be, as the rest of it is in the hands of the restaurant servers and the chefs. Be on your feet and alert at all times   Like other positions you can work as in a restaurant, being a restaurant host/hostess requires you to spend most of your shift on your feet. Depending on the restaurant you are working in, the host/hostess area varies. Sometimes you will just be standing behind a counter/podium to greet customers. Other restaurants have seating for the host/hostess to sit at while they greet customers. But most often, you will be active in greeting customers and walking them to their tables. On busy days, you will have limited time to sit back and relax outside of scheduled breaks. You dont want to be found slouching against a wall with your head down by your manager or prospective customers. It might be a bad day for you or the end of a long shift, but to new customers, it might as well be the beginning of your shift and they could be your first customers of the day. Even when there are no customers in the lobby at the moment, dont resort to exploring Instagram for a few minutes. You never know when a customer will sneak up on you, whether they are new customers and you just happened to miss the sound of the door opening, or if they are customers that are on the way out. You want to make sure that every customer that crosses your path gets equally great customer service at the beginning and end of their dining experience.

Fitness Trackers Not Tracking What You Think Photo Via: http://techfaqs.net With the Fitbit and Bellabeat LEAF available for consumers at reasonably expensive prices, it’s safe to say that we expect them to do exactly what they say they’re going to do: track our fitness. However, a recent study has revealed that this isn’t exactly the case. In fact, fitness trackers are actually glorified pedometers. This new study suggests that rather than tracking the energy we burn, fitness trackers are actually only good at counting the steps we take throughout the day. In the study, according to NBC, scientists pitted these fitness devices (12 in total including the Fitbit Flex and Jawbone UP24) against “proven methods of monitoring energy expenditure locking people in a room to assess every calorie consumed and burned, or asking people at home to drink specially treated water that makes it possible to detect energy output with a urine test.” The first experiment (locking people in a room) showed that fitness trackers were deviating from lab results by both underestimating and overestimating the amount of energy expenditure. The fitness trackers would underestimate by as much as 278 calories and overestimate by as much as 204 calories. In the second experiment (the urine tests) the fitness trackers ranged from 69 to 590 calories lower than the urine tests. While neither of these deviations seem all that threatening, they are at the very least troubling figures. For one thing, when fitness trackers are overestimating the amount of calories burned, those in need of more exercise run the risk of not getting enough because their tracker is misrepresenting what they’ve already done. This also could cause problems down the road, as this could increase the risk for obesity and other health problems, as their daily exercise routine isn’t quite up to par with what they should be doing. On the other hand, underestimating exercise can be just as dangerous. According to Dr. Adam Schoenfeld, a researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, “It could be quite dangerous if someone with heart disease had inaccurate recordings of their activity and exercise that was being used to make medical decisions.” Both over and underestimating have repercussions that depend upon the user, and the gravity of these results vary, but at the very least, it means that users aren’t exercising the way they think they are. While healthy people that use fitness trackers probably aren’t at risk if the information is a little off, those that are unhealthy and using it to change their way of living aren’t getting the information critical to their health. Still, according to Schoenfeld, “Even for healthy users, it may be difficult to promote health and wellness if these devices are proving inaccurate or variable feedback.” In another test on the accuracy of fitness trackers, scientists asked nine men and 10 women ages 21 to 50 to wear twelve different fitness tracking devices while participating in the two aforementioned experiments. These devices included: Fitbit Flex, Jawbone UP24, Misfit Shine, Epson Pulsense PS-100, Garmin Vivofit, Tanita AM-160, Omron CalorieScan HJA-403C, Withings Pulse 02 and the previously tested Panasonic Actimarker EW 4800, Suzuken Lifecorder EX, Omron Active style Pro JKA-350IT, and ActiGraph GT3X. In experiment one, the participants entered a metabolic chamber (or room designed to monitor calories consumed/burned over a 24 hour period). There, they were fed three meals, worked at a desk, exercised on a treadmill, watched TV, did housework and slept. To measure energy expenditure, scientists used indirect calorimetry (which measures the carbon dioxide production and oxygen consumption). When compared with the measurements taken by the fitness trackers, it was revealed that half of the trackers were underestimating energy expenditure. The rest overestimated it. In experiment two, the participants wore the devices for 15 days and collected urine samples eight of those days. In this experiment, each fitness tracker underestimated the energy expenditure. While there’s of course room for error, such as people taking off the devices (whether to charge the battery or to bathe) as well as the chosen participants, who weren’t obese/didn’t have health problems (so that their ability to exercise wasn’t inhibited), the findings are still pretty concrete. But that also means that the fitness trackers currently out there aren’t as accurate as we’d like to believe, and are probably giving us false information. In other words: there isn’t a reliable fitness tracker at the moment. According to Schoenfeld: “It is currently quite challenging to tell which fitness trackers are accurate and reliable and which are not since there aren’t much data available. These studies demonstrate that even the most popular applications and devices may be inaccurate or highly variable.”

Regardless of how it’s consumed, caffeine and college students share an intimate relationship. Whether it’s providing a quick jolt of energy to stay awake in class, or pulling an all-nighter for a paper, caffeine will do the trick. The drug stimulates our central nervous system which decreases fatigue and increases alertness. Relatively inexpensive, easily accessible and most importantly, legal, caffeine is the wonder drug of which our generation has taken full advantage. Emerging criticism, however, has sparked debate over the adverse effects of highly caffeinated beverages. As someone who personally drowns  them self  in all mater of caffeinated beverages, I’m well aware of the caffeine controversy. Energy drinks have recently surged to the forefront of this debate, a position formally occupied by coffee; but when it comes to the healthiest method of delivering caffeine to our bodies, which beverage dominates, and why? According to a report issued by the Specialty Coffee Association of America, in 2012, 40% of 18 to 24 year olds and 54% of 25 to 39 year olds drank coffee daily. On the recommendation of the American Medical Association, “moderate tea or coffee drinking has no negative effect on health, as long as you live an otherwise healthy lifestyle.” This is a rather lackluster endorsement for coffee in light of a series of astounding findings. In addition to disproving claims that coffee is associated with hypertension, researchers have linked coffee as a preventative for several illnesses, including Alzheimer’s, diabetes and a number of cancers. Contrary to popular belief, research suggests that caffeine is not the solitary chemical to thank for coffee’s health benefits. Rather, it is the result of a biochemical reaction in the fruit the coffee bean is housed in that gives it such dynamic properties. According to a recent study, “the complex mixture of phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables provides protective health benefits.”  Through the fusion of several of these naturally occurring compounds, including caffeine, coffee’s health benefits are born. In short, drinking coffee, not caffeine additives, is what your body will appreciate later in life; a truth that an increasing number of young Americans have learned the hard way. According to a report released last month by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the number of energy drink related emergency room visits increased to over 20,000 in 2012, a 36% boost from the previous year. With more patients aged 18 to 39 than any other age group. The total amount of caffeine in an energy drink can go up to 500  milligrams (mg), compared with the approximate 100 mg in a 5-ounce cup of coffee or 50 mg in a 12-ounce soda. As with all indulgences, caffeine is only beneficial in moderation. More than 500 to 600 mg of caffeine a day can result in muscle tremors, faster than normal heartbeats, upset stomachs, irritability, restlessness and increased blood pressure.  Energy drinks contain additional supplements, and therefore, have additional affects beyond caffeine. These additives such as Taurine and Zeratsky, are often marketed as natural substances, suggesting positive health implications. In reality, little is known about the long term effects of these compounds. As college students on a time crunch, we don’t necessarily have time to worry about what’s healthier when reaching for something to keep us going. When it comes down to it, caffeine and the beverages that possess them are something to be enjoyed in moderation. So pick your poison, as long as you don’t drown yourself in it.

Maybe she played  an instrument, sang in church or in a band, or splurged (or currently splurges) so  that you could take guitar lessons? Regardless, this Mother’s Day, we can’t help but think about rockin women in music who are also moms. 1. Madonna “Material girl”? More like “Mom-terial girl”! Did you know that  Madonna is a mother of four? Her oldest daughter, Lourdes, will be turning 22 this year. Can you imagine having Madonna as a mom? It must be at least a little trippy; one minute shes singing, “Gimme All Your Love”, and then the next  minute, she’s asking you to clean your room. But no matter what generation you  were born in, you’re probably familiar with at least one of Madonna’s songs (Lucky  Star, anyone?) and that kind of staying power is a dead give away that Madonna  rocks, and all while being a mom. 2. Patty Smyth In the early 80s, Patty Smyth sang the poppy “Goodbye To You” and  later, the lady power anthem, “The Warrior”, and young women everywhere were  inspired by the pep and fire in the songs. Cut to 2014, to a true story. I had just  performed at Joe’s Pub in N.Y.C., when a woman came over to me and said, “I really  loved your set.” I tried to play it cool, and I had to try hard, because it was none  other than Patty Smyth! We wandered outside into the cool night air, and she told  me, “You remind me of my daughter.” And then I remembered, oh yeah! This lady  has seen and done it all, from rockin’ the world’s stages to motherhood. Which  daughter? I thought to myself, because she has three. She didn’t elaborate, but wow, it  must be pretty cool to have the rockin’ Patty Smyth for a mom! 3. Gwen Stefani Though Kingston, Zuma and and Apollo might remind you of a  town in Jamaica, a dance class and a space mission, they are also the names of  Gwen’s offspring. When Gwen sang “Don’t Speak”, the world connected with the  song on a serious level. But if you are one of her children, the word’s might take a different  meaning… The powerful lyrics from her song, “I’m Just A Girl” make it hard to  imagine Gwen all grown up and disciplining a gaggle of human duckings. However,  it’s easy to see that she is a mom who totally rocks. 4. Kim Gordon This mom surely did things that most moms doâ€"she changed dirty  diapers, sang lullabys and celebrated little achievements with her daughter, Coco.  But she did something else that most mom’s don’tâ€"she helped define a generation  and a genre by creating Sonic Youth with Thurston Moore during a time in music  history when no-wave was all the rage. Unlike many moms, in addition to her musical output she also found time to  write a book. (Where does one find the time?!) In Girl In A Band, she elaborates on  her life and what it’s like to be as a mom who rocks. Hats off to Kim on this mother’s  day! 5. Beyonce ??? Beyonce’s daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, was in the spotlight  from the time she was born. And last year, the world waited for her twins to arrive like a kid waits  for gifts on Christmas. But aside from being a  rockstar and a mom, Beyonce still finds time to volunteer with the Make A Wish  Foundation and from most accounts, appears to be a kind and humble person.
